What is a 100 hour project?!

What is a 100 hour project?

I got the idea for this after reading Malcolm Gladwell’s book “Outliers”.   I was interested in the idea that spending 10,000 hours on something could turn one into an expert in the same category as some of the most successful people in history.  It seemed to apply to athletes, business people, musicians, artists, everyone.
Obviously in a school year there isn’t time to put in 10,000 hours of homework in order to become experts, but I thought getting students started would be a first step.  We therefore agreed that students could choose something they wanted to get better at/learn more about and use that as the basis for their 100 hour project.  If they wanted they could extend their project into their second year in our team.
Some of the kids have chosen cooking or baking.  A great help to their busy families.  Others have chosen fitness, learning a second language, learning an instrument, dance, art, improving their maths knowledge, etc.  I have chosen running.   Other projects I have in the back of my mind are improving my knowledge of French language, and improving my guitar skills.
The next step in the project is to get everyone blogging about their progress so we can all share our journeys and learning from each other.
Good luck team.
Sally
